How to Properly Move from Shopify to WooCommerce (Step by Step)

Do you want to move from Shopify to WooCommerce?

Many users want to move from Shopify to WooCommerce to avoid higher costs or have more control over their online stores.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to easily move from Shopify to WooCommerce with step-by-step instructions.

How to Properly Move from Shopify to WooCommerce (Step by Step)

Migrating from Shopify to WooCommerce

Shopify and WooCommerce are two of the most popular eCommerce platforms.

They both allow you to create an online store, but they are quite different in many ways. For more on this, see our comparison of Shopify vs WooCommerce with pros and cons of each platform.

For instance, Shopify is a fully hosted platform where you don’t need to worry about backups and updates. However, this comes with slightly higher costs and limited control of your website.

On the other hand, WooCommerce is open-source software that needs to be installed on your own hosting. That means you have much more flexibility with your online store, and you can completely customize it however you want.

Due to these differences, Shopify users often choose to switch to WooCommerce when they realize the true costs and limitations of that platform.

Unfortunately, Shopify does not provide an easy way to export data to a WordPress supported format.

There are some Shopify to WooCommerce migration services, but they charge a fortune to do the work for you. Their pricing for full migration varies based on number of products, customers, orders, and other factors.

So we built an easy importer tool to help you do the Shopify to WooCommerce migration for free.

That being said, let’s take a look at how you can move Shopify to WooCommerce without hiring an expensive migration service.

Step 1. Setting Up WooCommerce

Before migrating your Shopify store to WooCommerce, you’ll need to install and set up WooCommerce.

Unlike Shopify, WooCommerce is a self-hosted platform. This means you’ll need a web hosting account and a domain name to set up WooCommerce.

We recommend using Bluehost. They are one of the largest WooCommerce hosting company and officially recommended by WordPress and WooCommerce.

They have agreed to offer WPBeginner users a generous discount with free domain name and an SSL certificate. Basically, you can get started for $2.75 per month.

→ Click Here to Claim This Exclusive Bluehost Offer ←

After signing up for your hosting account, Bluehost will automatically install WordPress for you. You can access the WordPress dashboard from your hosting account dashboard.

Simply click the ‘Log in to WordPress’ button.

Log in to WordPress

This will bring you to the WordPress admin panel. You can now go to Plugins » Add New page and search for WooCommerce.

Install WooCommerce

Next, click on the Install Now button next to WooCommerce. WordPress will now install the WooCommerce plugin for you. After that, the Install Now button will say Activate. You need to click on the Activate button to continue.

Upon activation, WooCommerce will show you a set up wizard where you can set up payment gateway and enter your store information and other basics. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your store.

Click the button to start the setup wizard for WooCommerce

Step 2. Download Your Shopify Data

In the past, there was no reliable method to migrate Shopify to WooCommerce. No free migration tool existed to export your store data from Shopify and then import it into WooCommerce.

That means you’d have to either pay for an expensive service to do it for you, or you’d have to set up each product from scratch, one by one. You’d also lose any historical customer data such as previous order information.

We decided to solve this problem and created a Shopify to WooCommerce exporter. It allows you to export your Shopify data in a standardized format and then later import it into WooCommerce using a companion plugin.

Best of all, it’s totally free!

Let us show you how to migrate your data from Shopify.

First you need to visit the Shopify to WooCommerce website. From here, you need to enter your Shopify website URL and provide an email address.

Shopify to WooCommerce migrator

Click on the Submit button to continue.

This will take you to your store’s Shopify admin section, where you’ll be asked to install the app which will automatically generate a Shopify API key for data migration. Simply click on the Install App button at the bottom to continue.

Shopify to WooCommerce app permissions

On the next screen, the app will show you the data it will export using the Shopify API. Currently, it exports all your product data, product categories, customer data, and orders.

Note: Currently, the app does not export your Shopify pages or blog posts. You’ll need to manually import them into WordPress.

You’ll need to provide an email address where you’ll receive a link to download the export file.

Start Shopify export

Click on the Start Export button to continue.

The app will show you the progress of the migration process. Once it’s finished, you’ll see a download button. You’ll also get an email with a link to the download file.

Download export file

You can now go ahead and download the export file to your computer.

Step 3. Import Shopify Data in WooCommerce

Now that you have exported your Shopify data, the next step is to import it into your WooCommerce store. For that, you need to switch to the admin area of your WordPress website.

First, you need to install and activate the Import Shopify To WP plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit Tools » Shopify Importer. From here, click on the ‘Choose File’ button to select the export file you downloaded earlier.

Upload Shopify store data to WooCommerce

Click on the Upload button to continue.

Next, you’ll see a list of exported products found in your upload file. Simply click on the ‘Start Import’ button to begin importing them into your WooCommerce store.

Importing Shopify products into WooCommerce

The plugin will now start importing your data. You’ll be able to see the progress of your upload on the screen.

Once finished, it will show you a list of must have WooCommerce plugins (all of them are free) that you can install to grow your WooCommerce store.

Recommended plugins

Click on the continue button to move forward.

Import finished

You can now review your imported products, orders, order status, and WooCommerce product categories to make sure that everything is imported.

Step 4. Customizing Your WooCommerce Store

Now that you’ve successfully migrated your products, orders, and other shop data from Shopify to WooCommerce, it’s time to finish setting up your WooCommerce store.

This includes choosing a design, installing add-ons for additional options and functionality, and choosing tools to grow your WordPress website.

1. Choose a Theme (Template) for Your Website

Choosing WooCommerce theme

With a WooCommerce shop, you can choose from thousands of WordPress themes. These professionally designed themes will make your WooCommerce store stand out, and they come with easy to use customization options.

4. Set up Conversion Tracking

5. Boost Conversions and Sales

Newsletter signup form in popup

Did you know that more than 75% of users leave an online store without adding products to their shopping cart or making a purchase?

This is where OptinMonster comes in. It allows you to easily convert website visitors into subscribers and customers.

You can use OptinMonster to show targeted popups, slide-in popups, countdown timers, header and footer banners, and more.

For more tips, take a look at our guide on how to recover abandoned cart sales in WooCommerce.

Step 5. Setting Up Redirects

Now that your WooCommerce shop is completely set up, the last step is to set up the proper redirects from Shopify to WooCommerce.

Redirects automatically send search engines and visitors from your old Shopify website to your new WooCommerce store. That way, you won’t lose any customers if they end up on the wrong website.

If your store had a Shopify branded domain name (Example: yourstore.myshopify.com), then you cannot set up individual redirects. One easy solution to deal with this is to add a link to your new store by editing your Shopify website.

Moving Your Domain from Shopify to WooCommerce

If your Shopify store was using a custom domain name, then you can point it to your WooCommerce store and set up redirects.

To do that you’ll need to change your domain’s DNS settings. Your new hosting provider will provide you with DNS server addresses that you need to enter in your domain settings. They typically look like this:

ns1.bluehost.com
ns2.bluehost.com

If your domain is registered via Shopify, then you can login to your account and go to Online Store » Domains to manage your DNS settings.

Manage Shopify domain

For other domain registrars, see our article on how to easily change DNS nameservers.

Update URLs in WooCommerce

Next, there may be URLs in your product descriptions still pointing to your old Shopify branded domain. Here is how you can bulk update all those URLs easily, instead of trying to find them one by one.

Simply install and activate the the Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit Tools » Update URLs page. From here you need to enter your Shopify store URL as the old URL and your WooCommerce domain name as the new URL.

Update URLs

Then, simply click the ‘Update URLs NOW’ button at the bottom, and it will fix all your links across your site.

Once your URLs are updated, you could uninstall the plugin from your site.

Setting Up Redirects for Individual Pages and Posts

Lastly, if you have any blog posts or pages, then you would want to redirect visitors and search engines to the correct page.

First, you need to install and activate the Redirection plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit the Tools » Redirection page. Simply follow the instructions in the setup wizard to set up the plugin.

After that, you need to click on the Add New button to add your first redirect. Simply provide the URL of the post or page in the Source URL field, and then enter the new URL in the Target URL field.

Set up redirects

Don’t forget to click on the ‘Add Redirect’ button to save your changes.

For detailed tips on setting up redirects, take a look at our guide on how to set up redirects in WordPress.

That’s it! You have successfully set up your new WooCommerce shop.

How to Put Your WordPress Site in Maintenance Mode

Do you want to put your WordPress site in maintenance mode?

Maintenance mode allows you to display a user-friendly notice to your visitors instead of a broken site during website maintenance.

It also allows you to safely perform any maintenance task while making sure that people who need access to the website still have access.

In this article, we will show you how to easily put your WordPress site in maintenance mode. We will also show you how to make your maintenance mode page more pleasant, helpful, and user-friendly.

putting your WordPress site in maintenance mode

Why and When You Need to Put WordPress in Maintenance Mode

Normally, you can work on customizing your WordPress website without having to put it in maintenance mode. You can perform minor tweaks, publish new content, and update themes and plugins without any downtime.

However, sometimes you may need to work on your website for a longer period, like when you are manually setting up a new theme or configuring a new plugin that changes the behavior of your website. During this time, your website may appear broken to your users.

If your website has a lot of traffic, then you don’t want your users to see a broken website because it creates a bad user experience and give them a poor impression of your brand.

A common way to deal with this situation is by setting up a staging website. This allows you to work on your website under a test environment and push the changes to your live website when you are done.

Some of the top WordPress hosting companies offer 1-click staging websites, such as Bluehost, SiteGround, and WP Engine.

You would still need to setup maintenance mode, but it will be for a very short period of time.

If you’re not using a staging site, then you definitely need to put your website under maintenance mode because you’re applying changes on the live website. This allows you to remedy the bad user experience problem.

Putting your WordPress site in maintenance mode allows you to show a user-friendly notification, alternative links to visit, and provide a timeframe for when the maintenance will be done.

Having that said, let’s take a look at how to easily put your WordPress site in maintenance or under-construction mode.

We will show you two different plugins to create coming soon or maintenance mode pages. You can choose the one that works best for you.

Video Tutorial

If you’d prefer written instructions, just keep reading.

1. Set up WordPress Maintenance Mode using SeedProd Plugin

SeedProd is a free WordPress plugin that allows you to create completely custom Coming Soon pages, Maintenance Mode pages, custom 404 pages, and even full marketing landing pages. It’s the best landing page builder for WordPress, used on more than a million websites.

There’s also a premium version of SeedProd that offers more premium templates, advanced customization features, and marketing integrations.

But to put your WordPress site in maintenance mode, you only need the free version of SeedProd.

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the SeedProd plugin. For more details, see our guide on how to install a plugin in WordPress.

Once the plugin is installed and activated, navigate to SeedProd » Pages and click ‘Set up a Maintenance Mode Page.’

Set up a maintenance mode page

The next step is to build the maintenance page that visitors will see once you enable maintenance mode.

You need to start by choosing a pre-made template or start from a blank template. To select a template, hover your mouse over a thumbnail and click the check icon.

Choose a maintenance page template

This will open the SeedProd drag & drop WordPress page builder where you can customize any element.

You can also add new content elements by dragging blocks from the left panel.

SeedProd visual editor

For example, you might add your own custom logo, background, email subscription form, social sharing buttons, countdown timer, progress bar, etc.

Once you are satisfied with your changes, click on the ‘Save’ button.

Saving maintenance page

The final step is to enable the WordPress maintenance mode. Simply visit SeedProd » Pages in your WordPress dashboard and toggle the maintenance mode to ‘Active.’

Enable maintenance mode in SeedPro

You can now visit your website in a new incognito browser tab to preview your maintenance mode page in action.

Controlling Website Access for Logged in Users

By default, SeedProd will display your maintenance mode page to all visitors who are not logged in.

Anyone with an account will be able to log in like they usually do. This includes membership website subscribers and online store customers.

To select who can access your website during maintenance, you’ll need to edit the maintenance page settings. Simply visit SeedProd » Pages and click the ‘Edit Page’ button under Maintenance Mode.

Edit maintenance page

Inside the SeedProd builder, you need to click Page Settings at the top of the page, and then select the Access Controls tab.

Maintence mode access controls

From here you can select methods to bypass maintenance mode. You might use a cookie, allow certain user IP addresses, or give users a secret bypass URL to get passed the maintenance page.

The most effective method is to simply select the user roles that can access the website.

For instance, adding the administrator role will make it so only the administrator will be given access to see the regular website.

Maintenance mode access by role

You can also include or exclude user roles created by your WordPress membership plugin or the eCommerce plugin.

Once you are satisfied with the access controls, don’t forget to click on the ‘Save’ button to store your settings.

Exclude Specific Pages from Maintenance Mode

Another great feature of SeedProd is that it allows you to selectively include or exclude pages from maintenance mode.

This comes in handy in many situations when you may need to allow some users to access certain pages.

For example, if your website uses a custom login page, then you would want to exclude it from maintenance mode. If you provide customer support via email, then you may want to exclude your contact form page as well.

You can include or exclude specific pages by adding any URLs under the Include/Exclude URL settings.

Exclude URLs from maintenance page

After entering the pages you want to exclude or include, don’t forget to click on the ‘Save All Changes’ button to save your settings.

If you want to use SeedProd on an under construction website, then see our guide on how to easily create coming soon pages in WordPress with SeedProd.

2. Setup Maintenance Mode Using WP Maintenance Mode Plugin

This method uses another popular plugin WP Maintenance mode. It allows you to quickly setup a simple maintenance mode, but their design builder functionality is not as powerful as SeedProd.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the WP Maintenance Mode plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, go to Settings » WP Maintenance Mode to configure the plugin settings.

WP Maintenance Mode

The plugin’s setting screen is divided into five tabs. By default, you will see the General options tab.

The first option under General is Status, which is set to Deactivated by default. In order to put your WordPress blog into maintenance mode, you need to set it to ‘Activated’.

If you want search engines to be able to see your website while it is in maintenance mode, then you need to set ‘Bypass for Search Bots’ option to Yes. If you have an established website, then we recommend setting this to Yes.

WP Maintenance Mode allows you, the administrator, to have full access to your website during the maintenance mode. This means that you can see the working website and login to your WordPress dashboard.

You can specify which user roles should be allowed to access the front and backend of the website while it is in maintenance mode. By default, it is set to Administrator only.

Other options on the page are self-explanatory. Once you are satisfied with the settings, you need to click on the Save settings button to store your changes.

Creating Your Own Splash Page for Maintenance Mode

WP Maintenance Mode allows you to create beautiful landing pages to display during maintenance mode. To create your splash page, simply click on the Design tab on the plugin’s settings page.

Design your maintenance page

First, you need to provide a title, heading, and content to display on your maintenance page. If you are creating a coming soon page, then you can change the content accordingly.

Next, you need to select the text color and background type. You can choose from the background color, choose a pre-defined image, or upload your own background image.

Once you are done with the settings, don’t forget to click on the save changes button to store your settings.

Adding Countdown and Newsletter Signup on WordPress Maintenance Page

If you are putting WordPress in coming soon mode or just want to let users know when your site will be up, then you can use a countdown timer module that’s included with the plugin.

You can set it up by going to the Modules tab on the plugin’s settings page. From here you can select a start date and enter the remaining time.

Adding a countdown timer

You can also allow users to subscribe and be notified when your website is back online. These users will be notified via the plugin, and they will not be subscribed to your email marketing list.

Subscribe to be notified

You want to make sure that your WordPress site is able to send emails. For more details, see our guide on how to fix WordPress not sending email issue to test and fix WordPress emails.

Next, you can also add links to your social media profiles in the coming soon mode or maintenance mode page. Simply enter your social media profile URLs, and the plugin will automatically display the social buttons.

Add social media buttons

Optionally, you can also enable Google Analytics and add your tracking ID in the plugin settings.

Don’t forget to click on the save settings button to store your changes.

WP Maintenance mode also allows you to set up a pre-programed live chat bot which includes an interactive conversational help box. You can use this feature to politely ask users if they would like to subscribe.

Manage bot settings

If you enable the bot, then it will hide the maintenance mode content you had set in the General settings page. This is how the chatbot would look on your website.

Chatbot preview

If you are collecting user data through the signup forms on your maintenance mode or coming soon mode page, then you would want to make it GDPR compliant.

You can do this by switching to the GDPR tab on the plugin’s settings page. From here you can enable the privacy module and select your privacy policy page.

GDPR settings

You can now visit your website in a new browser window with the incognito mode, and you will be greeted with your maintenance mode or coming soon page.

Preview of the maintenance mode page

How to Add Breadcrumbs in WooCommerce (Beginners Guide)

Do you need an easy way to add breadcrumbs to your WooCommerce store?

Breadcrumbs help your customers to navigate your website more easily. They also help search engines to understand the structure and hierarchy of your site’s content and display them in search results.

In this article, we’ll show you how to add breadcrumbs in WooCommerce using very simple methods.

Add WooCommerce Breadcrumbs

Why Should You Add Breadcrumbs in WooCommerce?

Breadcrumbs are navigational links that appear at the top of your product pages or blog posts. These links show your visitors how they ended up on the page they’re currently viewing.

For example, if you have a WooCommerce store that sells clothes, then the breadcrumb menu could look something like this: Home » Men’s Fashion » Shirts & Polo » Formal Shirts.

WooCommerce Breadcrumbs example

Enabling breadcrumbs in WooCommerce makes it easier for your customers to navigate your online store and find the products they’re looking for. They can easily click the product attributes or categories to view related products.

Breadcrumbs also help search engines understand the hierarchy and structure of the links on your eCommerce store. Search engines like Google even display them in the search results, which can boost your click-through rate.

That being said, let’s look at how you can enable breadcrumbs on your WooCommerce store.

Method 1: Add Breadcrumbs in WooCommerce using AIOSEO (Recommended)

The easiest way to enable breadcrumbs in WooCommerce is by using the All in One SEO (AIOSEO) plugin.

It’s the best WordPress SEO plugin on the market and allows you to add breadcrumbs in WooCommerce with a click of a button. The plugin also helps you optimize your store for search engines without any technical skills.

For this tutorial, we’ll be using the AIOSEO Pro version because it includes breadcrumbs templates and offers more options for customization.

There is also a free version available which includes breadcrumbs but doesn’t offer breadcrumb templates.

First, you’ll need to install and active the AIOSEO plugin on your website. You can refer to our guide for more details on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you’ll need to navigate to All in One SEO » General Settings and enter your license key. You can find the key in the AIOSEO account area.

All in One SEO license

Next, you’ll need to set up AIOSEO on your WooCommerce store using its setup wizard. If you need help, then you can follow our guide on how to setup All in One SEO for WordPress.

Once you’ve correctly configured the plugin on your website, you’ll need to go to the All in One SEO » General Settings page and then click on the ‘Breadcrumbs’ tab.

Enable breadcrumbs display in All in One SEO

After that, you can turn on the ‘Enable Breadcrumbs’ option, and AIOSEO will automatically add breadcrumbs schema markup to your WooCommerce store’s code.

Next, you’ll need to choose how you’d like to display the breadcrumbs. Simply scroll down and you’ll see the different ways to add breadcrumbs to your online store.

You can add them to any page or post manually by using a shortcode or block, or add them to a widget area. Advanced users can also use PHP code to add breadcrumbs to their theme template files.

We’ll show you how to add breadcrumbs to your WooCommerce products below, but first let’s take a look at the customization options.

Breadcrumb display options

Now, if you scroll down to the Breadcrumbs Settings section, then you’ll see multiple settings to customize your breadcrumbs.

For instance, you can change the separator symbol, enable the homepage link, add a breadcrumb prefix, change the format, and more. You can even see a preview of how your navigational links appear on your WooCommerce store.

Breadcrumb settings

AIOSEO Pro also gives you access to breadcrumb templates. These templates allow you to show professional-looking breadcrumb links on your website for different content types, taxonomies, and archives.

AIOSEO Breadcrumb Templates

Not only that, but the WordPress plugin also offers different options to customize the template. For instance, you can disable the option for ‘Use a default template’ and view more settings.

Customize product breadcrumb template

There are options to show homepage link, post type archive link, taxonomy link, add tags to the template, and select whether you’d want to prioritize categories or tags taxonomy.

If you have parent categories set up for multiple products, then you can also customize them in the breadcrumb template editor.

When you’re done, don’t forget to save your changes.

Next, you’ll need to add breadcrumbs to your WooCommerce product pages.

AIOSEO will show four different methods, but the easiest way is by using a shortcode to display the breadcrumbs navigational links on your online store.

Use a shortcode to add breadcrumbs

All you have to do is add the following shortcode where you’d like to show the breadcrumbs.

[aioseo_breadcrumbs]

Simply head over to Products » All Products and edit a product page. Next, you can add the shortcode in the WordPress editor’s ‘Text’ view and update your page.

Add shortcode in product page

You can now visit your product page to see the breadcrumbs navigational links in action.

Breadcrumbs example

Besides that, you can also add breadcrumbs to your WooCommerce store’s sidebar. This way, you won’t have to edit each individual product page to show navigational links, since they’ll appear throughout your site in the sidebar.

To display breadcrumbs in the sidebar, you can head over to Appearance » Widgets from your WordPress admin area.

Click the plus sign icon in the top left, and then search for “breadcrumbs” to find the ‘AIOSEO – Breadcrumbs’ widget. Simply drag and drop it into to the sidebar. You can also enter a title for your navigational links.

AIOSEO Breadcrumbs widget

Once that’s done, you can click the ‘Save’ button and then view your WooCommerce store to see the breadcrumbs in the sidebar.

WooCommerce Sidebar Breadcrumbs

If you want to use other ways to add breadcrumbs to your WooCommerce store, then check out our guide on how to display breadcrumb navigation links in WordPress.

How to Add Breadcrumbs for Multiple Categories

Do you have products on your WooCommerce store that have multiple categories?

If yes, then setting up breadcrumbs correctly can be a challenge because WordPress doesn’t record the path a customer took to land on the product page.

However, AIOSEO automatically adds the first category in the breadcrumb and makes it easy to show correct navigation menu for products that have multiple categories.

The plugin also offers a breadcrumb template that you can customize for WordPress taxonomies like product categories. All you have to do is head over to All in One SEO » General Settings and then select the Breadcrumbs tab.

Next, scroll down to the ‘Breadcrumbs Templates’ section and select the Taxonomies tab. By default, the plugin will show the parent item link in the breadcrumb on your WooCommerce store.

Show parent category in breadcrumbs

If you disable the ‘Use a default template’ option, then you’ll see that the ‘Show parent item link’ is enabled. This way, you can easily show the primary category for any product on your website.

For example, let’s say you’re running an online shoe store and one of the products is in both the Sneakers and Trainers categories.

AIOSEO will automatically pick the first category and display that in the breadcrumb navigational menu.

Method 2: Add Breadcrumbs using WooCommerce Breadcrumbs Plugin

Another way to enable breadcrumbs in WooCommerce is by using the WooCommerce Breadcrumbs plugin.

It’s a free WordPress plugin that allows you to add breadcrumbs to your online store. The plugin is easy to use but lacks the customization features that you will find in AIOSEO.

First, you’ll need to install and activate the WooCommerce Breadcrumbs plugin. For more details, you can refer to our tutorial on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Once the plugin is active, you can head over to Settings » WC Breadcrumbs from your WordPress admin area. After that, go ahead and click the checkbox for ‘Enable breadcrumbs.’

Enable WooCommerce Breadcrumbs

Next, you can change the appearance of the navigational links that will appear on your WooCommerce store.

The WooCommerce plugin lets you choose the breadcrumb separator symbol and HTML tags before and after your breadcrumbs.

Now, if you scroll down, then you’ll find more options for customization. For instance, you can change the text and URL for your homepage that will appear in the navigational links.

When you’re done with the changes, don’t forget to click the ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom.
